Welcome to our first on-line Newsletter for North San Diego
Branch of MTAC. As newsletter chair, I am very excited about
this. It means no copying, folding, mailing and the usual
group that gets “lost in the mail.” You will be
able to access this anytime you need to refer to something
and not have to search through all the papers piled on desks
to see where you last saw it. And it saves many trees. I know
many have expressed concern about a “hard copy”
form, however this will be easily downloaded and can be put
in a notebook for a quick reference. I can also keep to a
much tighter schedule for publication. If you have something
for the newsletter, please submit it before the 15th of the
month. I will try to have new newsletter on line by the 25th
of the month. This first one is later due to some later submissions
this month.
Submit articles to Jane Masur, jane@ozziesmusic.com
We had a great turn out, and all only through emails! I was
very impressed and want to welcome all the new members who

for CM information this year.
For all your CM concerns, please go to the North San Diego
MTAC website, www.nsdmtac.com, and go to the Events and Programs
Link and scroll to Certificate of Merit. There is a link at
the end for the work contract, general branch information
letter, and student letter from the State. Remember CM is
still registered through the State Website with a lockout
date of November 15th. Our Website is for specific instructions
pertaining to our Branch and our work contract, scheduling
information, and other branch related information. You will
need to refer to both sites for CM concerns.
Hint: For those of you who still like to refer quickly to
information on hard copies, download information from both
websites and create a notebook for easy access to information.

Learn About the Games Available through TCW (Three Cranky
Women)
Charlene Zundel, guest speaker
TCW Resources L.L.C. was founded in 1993 by Laura G. Zisette,
Charlene Zundel, and Kathleen Lloyd to create teaching materials
that are thorough, easy to use, and fun and stimulating for
students. The materials are age- and level-appropriate, well-paced,
and employ multiple approaches to accommodate varied learning
styles.
TCW materials are piloted through the Utah State University
Youth Conservatory, a music preparatory program for community
children. This conservatory serves over 250 students, ages
5-18, through group theory classes and individual piano lessons.
Its curriculum offers weekly group theory classes and individual
piano lessons as well as many other extra-curricular programs.
The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) stated
that "the USUYC should be a national model for music
preparatory programs."
TCW materials are used in many other preparatory programs
and conservatories around the United States and Canada.
Until July of 2000, Charlene Zundel was on the faculty of
the USU Youth Conservatory where she taught individual piano
lessons and various group theory classes for 14 years. She
served on the committee for selecting curriculum for the Conservatory
and was an adjunct faculty member at Utah State University.
She also has maintained a large private teaching studio for
over 17 years.
Charlene has co-authored numerous teaching materials, including
the Keyboard Gymnastics Achievement Program and the Kreative
Keyboard Collection. She has co-developed games and teaching
materials offered through TCW Resources. She is active as
a clinician, adjudicator, and performer.
Charlene studied at Ricks College, in Rexburg Idaho (now
BYU Idaho), and Utah State University where she was a student
of Gary Amano. Charlene is a member of the Music Teacher's
National Association and a past president of her UMTA Chapter.
Since moving to Arizona, she has been active in the PMTA
(Phoenix Music Teachers Association) and is serving on the
state board of the Arizona State MTA as the 4th V.P. of publications.
She completed training and taught the Musikgarten curriculum
for young children for numerous years. She has participated
in masterclasses with Nelita True, Claude Frank, Daniel Pollack,
Leon Fleischer, Andre-Michel Schub, and Charles Rosen.
Charlene now resides in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband
and their three children. She just completed running her first
marathon and is excited to do another. She is our primary
presenter at conventions and workshops around the country.
This festival will be held on October 8, 2005 from 10:00
to 5:00 p.m. We have 25 teachers participating with over 100
students playing! During this fun event, we will also be offering
some entertainment. The festival will be held at the Museum
of Making music in Carlsbad. At 1:00 p.m. we have a special
band performing called the “FIJIS”. This is a
rock band made up of 13 & 14 year olds! We also have entertainment
during the day in the lobby. The museum will be open for students
and families to visit. We have publicized this event, so are
hoping for a good turnout.
Please come by and check out this new festival even if you
did not register students. We will be asking the membership
if they would like to hold a similar festival next year, and
if we should increase the size.
Teachers participating have been notified by e-mail. Please
encourage your students and families to stay or come early
for the 1:00 p.m. performance. Teachers who are helping at
recitals, please arrive ½ hr. early to get your assignment.
